This online session will focus on Asian American Journalists Association's work in advancing diversity, equity and inclusion in Asia, including a study we're working on about the state of gender diversity in Japanese newsrooms. The discussions on diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) are just beginning in many newsrooms across Asia, and it's an important effort to take during a time of many political and demographic changes in this region and the evolving attitudes and behaviors when it comes to news consumption.
AAJA-Asia launched the Advancing News Diversity in Asia (ANDA) project last year in seven markets (Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, The Philippines, Singapore and Taiwan) to define diversity, equity and inclusion from an Asia perspective. The project aims to raise awareness and support efforts to improve diversity and representation in newsrooms and coverage throughout Asia. We're looking at diversity from all angles: ethnicity, gender, religion, socioeconomics, geography. We're studying how newsrooms represent these diverse communities in their countries through their news coverage, newsroom diversity and newsroom leadership. Starting this spring, AAJA-Asia will begin releasing the results of our study, with the next steps on how to engage with newsrooms to shape their diversity efforts for a more equitable and inclusive news environment across the region.
